Durgapur Project
Durgapur’s Affordable Housing Project is expected to provide around 2,000 housing units within ‘Sujalaam Skycity” in Durgapur, West Bengal.
Background
As the supply hub for India’s north-eastern region and host to an expanding services industry, Durgapur is on a sustainable path for growth, with quality employment, transport, education, and medical facilities planned or already in place. The Durgapur Affordable Housing project is expected to be one of the first Grade A organized residential development projects targeted toward the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Lower Income Group (LIG) in the region and will provide more than 6,000 people with better housing at affordable prices, with proximity to services and job opportunities in Durgapur. This also reduces the costs of house ownership by tapping policies that fall under the Government of India initiatives.
Project Description & Benefits
- The project consists of 2 developments: 800 EWS housing over Site-1 & 988 LIG-MIG housing units over Site-2. These sites are part of a large self-contained emerging airport township. The township already has an operating airport with several industrial units/warehouses and schools operating for the last couple of years. The airport is expected to gather strength with new routes, industrial parks, logistic hubs, schools, hotels, offices, residential complexes, etc. This will assist in creating job opportunities.
- Residents of the Durgapur Affordable Housing Project will benefit from the access to its surroundings commercial developments (such as grocery shops, restaurants, banks, and other professional services) as well as serve as their anchor customers. This is expected to stimulate the development of the aerotropolis in the long run.
- The success of the Durgapur Affordable Housing project is expected to pave the way for a greater private sector investment in affordable housing projects in other Tier-2 cities in West Bengal & across India.
- Beyond the direct employment provided through the building and operation of the housing project, a wider economic impact is expected: industrial and commercial services serving the residential area will develop, creating additional permanent jobs for people in the lower-income groups
